Ever taken time out to ponder on what the world would look like with some fire-disgorging or water-spitting creature [that has to just live by expressing its unique characteristic] lurking somewhere around the corner of our 'orb'? The legend of dragons is one myth that has filled our subconscious ever since childhood [when we kind of get awestruck upon listen to the tale of what a dragon is capable of doing]; it is indeed a 'fascinating' myth that has drawn tremendous attention from both adults and children. Here, is a legend that seems to have been well crafted, and preserved over the course of history hence, its richness transcends many generations. We have come to know that dragons are some sort of monstrous or humongous creatures that vary in size and shape, and also behavioural pattern.
But did they just come about?
The existence of dragons though has some mythological connotations attached to it but what triggered their 'creation' is definitely not a myth. The legends of dragons are supposedly perceived to have emerged from certain animals of the avian and reptilian families; some of these (reptiles) include venom-spitting snakes and crocodile. The characteristics portrayed by these reptiles could have been the inspiration behind the creation of these imaginary creatures.
And speaking about the origin; there are basically two (2) archetypes of dragon- the European dragon [which were depicted to have six different appendages] and the Chinese dragon [that had snake-like appearance]. While the European dragon has some linkage with the Balkans and West Asia, the Chinese dragon has impacted the evolvement of other Asian dragon legends.
Although the legends of dragons might keep gaining traction [among several cultures around the world]; what will remain unchanged is that dragons are creatures that existed- and extinct- right in the minds of men.
